Groups?

Tue Sep 1, 2009, 6:50 PM
Apparently there are a ton of groups out their being populated before the official release of the Groups feature? Hope there is some sort of directory for them, I can imagine what it's going to be like looking for groups to join out of 1,000,000 of them.

I've applied to the Creative group so far, waiting for Toronto to turn into a group.

Seriously?

Thu Aug 27, 2009, 10:22 PM
I can't imagine having the temperament to deal with all the whining that goes on around here. Sharing links is the big issue of the day? Jesus Christ. Every year it's something isn't it. But sharing links? Common people. Why are you even posting your work on the Internet if you don't want to share it?

I don't know what to be more appalled by, the fact that people don't seem to get how the Internet works, or the fact that they still bitch when a solution is given. Maybe it's more irritating because it seems like even senior members, people who should have some semblance of sense, are on this bandwagon too.

Honestly, even coming up with a way to disable sharing links seems like a massive waste of time and resources to address the complaints of dullards.

Let it not be said that DA doesn't try and give people what they want. Only for people to complain further.

Contests?

Sat Jul 25, 2009, 1:40 PM
How does one go about holding a contest around here?
I am doing some work on a clients site, and we'd like to get some artists to do renditions of our mascot.
What sort of prizes are considered worth people's efforts btw?

I may come here everyday, but the reality is I only do so to read `TheRyanFord's journal. Sometimes I'll catch a deviation in my dash to clear out my message center as quickly as possible, but otherwise I'm a fairly inactive user.

It's hard to imagine now how this site was the hub of my life just 4 years ago. For three years I litteraly grew up here, this was the Facebook of my youth. I was fortunate enough to meet some great people along the way too. The Summit and devMeets in Wisconsin and Illinois were some of the best times to date becuase of those people. deviantART's effects on me echo on to this day, if it wasn't for deviantART I probably wouldn't have even known such a thing as graphic design existed, becuase my High School guidance counselours sure as hell didn't.

At some point though it just all semed to go to hell in a handbasket. My friends where no longer here, and what people refer to the "good old days" had come to an abrupt halt. Everyone moved on, and I did so as well. The site had become so chaotic and massive that it was becoming more noise then signal for me, esspecialy considering the heavy skew towards anime at the time. Any attempt to come back in the last 4 years and reconnect with the site has been increasingly frustrating as well. My friends weren't here and wading through all the new people was an unplesent idea.

I still go to devMeets, and meet some cool people occasionaly, but at this point in time I'm not familiar with 90% of the people who work and run deviantART, the star artists in the community, or what the latest silly drama is (terms of service still a thing every year?). So I mostly stick to the KATG forums and design forums.

But at the HQ World Tour stop over in Toronto Friday I was supprised to see what could be a turning point, Groups.
Of course anyone who's been around a while will roll their eyes when I say the G word, having been hearing about it for 4 years now, but this time it looks like it's going to be a reality, and it looks like it will be able to cut through all the noise and give some of us old folks some signal again.

The idea of micro-communities, a portal for like minded people so much more powerfull then clubs could ever have been is something I can see putting the wind in our sails again.

Still one thing is lacking. Some sort of friend managment tool. I'd love to clean up my list of people I watch, but whenever I go to do so I get overwhelmed by the shear size of the list and the way it's designed. It's a wall of names I no longer know, and check boxes.

It was great to see +spyed again and meet $Heidi finally and feel like a part of the community again.
Everyone else I meet was super cool as well (the list would be too long). Except for `neom he was a real mean guy.

Devcast Update

Update:

We will be recording a new episode this month, hopefully this next week. We're going to change the format slightly and the name, but we'll still have deviantArt in our cross-hairs so to speak. So let us know if there is anything you think we should talk about in in the deviantArt world for episode 3. Yes there is an episode 2, no it wont be released anytime soon.

Ta ta for now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

So since the launch of our pilot episode of devCast we've received a lot of feedback. Most of it positive, but not all of it. We are definitely going to take some of the suggestions to heart when we film episode number 3.0 (yes we have already filmed 2.0).

Length, Production, and Attitude were the main points of criticism.

Some found the episode too long, and we have already begun to time it down to under 25 mins in episode two. Eventually I'd like it to be down too 20 mins, some have suggested 5 too 10 but I think that's a little short for a monthly-ish program.
Most of the podcasts I regularly listen too though are an hour long and weekly or daily, so we need to test the market a little.

Production was crap, I know, I produce a weekly TV show for Shaw Cable. We had zero planing and were mostly shooting from the hip. `neom basically said he wanted to do a podcast and, after arguing about it for an hour, we sat down and did it. I made him write down an outline though quickly before we did it, but he was excited and in a hurry. Lots of dead air, poor lighting, and poor audio also plugged my soul. But there isn't much we could do about it without sinking some money into it. Neom couldn't figure out how to edit the video in iMovie HD either, and I was too sick to be awake and show him. It was mostly an experimental thing anyways, and we didn't decided to do more of these until after the first one was put out.

Some have also mentioned that we focused on alot of negatives about DA. We talk about some in the next episode, but we also talk about a positive feature too. We mostly ramble on about devmeets though. I think its not as good as our first, but we're not going to re shoot it.

But despite or because of all that, the majority of people overwhelmingly enjoyed it. Will we continue with an episode 3? Hard to say, we live very far apart. But were working on some sort of webcam set up, or an audio only version. But who knows. We hope we can.

So thanks for the feedback, and the comments, and we hope you stay and enjoy episode 2 as well.

London devMeet

I've just moved to London, so I figured I'd get a devMeet together for the London deviants.

Looking at doing this sometime in March, date isn't set yet.
Haven't figured out what we'd do yet either, but there is enough people under 19 that we'd have to find something that they could participate in too. Afterwards the adults could go get a drink somewhere.

So who's comming?

Christmas

Mon Dec 25, 2006, 2:48 AM
  • Mood: Sarcastic
It's funny how important this site was in my life two years ago this time.

I can remember almost every Christmas eve back 5 years. Which is great because I only wrote down the last 3 in a journal somewhere. I can remember the eve, recently breaking up with Sarah, looking out at the sky, writing poems about her. The Christmas me and Jessica got into a fight about where I would wake up on Christmas morning, and how she eventually caved and came over here to sleep. The Christmas after breaking up with Jessica, the lighting, the smells, the mood. Last Christmas with Adrienne, over with Darcy and Julie opening presents. And now this year, pretty standard. I wish a certain someone was here to spend the night with, but I'm pretty content right now.

As bad as things have seemed sometimes, well they seem pretty bad at the time, but it makes life interesting and those other Christmases all the better.

I miss Christmas with all of them, well except for Sarah who will be here tomorrow morning for Christmas festivities. Weird.

So Merry Christmas. I guess.

So I'm going to my very first press check today. Better believe that there will be pictures taken. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing there.. but I probably should have a loop or something to check the alignment. It's a good thing I dated someone in school for pressman stuff.
